US Govt inaugurates newly renovated National Veterinary Laboratory in Cameroon

Dr. Robert Pope, Director of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency's Cooperative Threat Reduction Program, cut the ribbon on the newly rebuilt National Veterinary Laboratory (LANAVET), which was financed by the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) with $3.27 million on March 15, 2022. (1.845 billion Francs CFA).


At the same time, Paul Richardson, the United States Agency for International Development's (USAID) Country Representative, officially donated laboratory equipment and supplies worth $340,000 (192 million Francs CFA) provided by USAID through the Food and Agriculture Organization's Emerging Pandemic Threats Program (FAO).


"Today, we are displaying the superb collaboration and work of two United States agencies, DTRA and USAID," Dr. Robert Pope said in his remarks. He also complimented Dr. Wade, LANAVET's Director-General, and his team for their efforts, noting that "We see Cameroon as a regional leader and strategic partner in Africa's efforts to improve animal health and security. Cameroon's national disease surveillance capacities will improve as a result of the establishment of a unified laboratory network, allowing for early detection and response to disease outbreaks. It has the potential to save lives ".


Dr. Taiga, Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries (MINEPIA), Dr. Athman Mravili, FAO Resident Representative in Cameroon, and Dr. Abel Wade, Director General of LANAVET, attended the occasion. Dr. Taiga extended his gratitude to the United States government and stated that the government of the Republic of Cameroon will continue to work to prevent livestock diseases and zoonotic diseases in order to protect the population's health.
