TURKEY OFFICIALLY NOTIFIES THE UN OF A CHANGE OF NAME OF THE COUNTRY

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has sent a letter to the United Nations officially requesting that his country be called "Türkiye," the official news agency reported.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government requested Turkey's internationally recognized name goes back to "Türkiye" (tur-key-YAY), as it is spelled and spoken in Turkish. Following its declaration of independence in 1923, the country was renamed "Türkiye."

Erdogan ordered the usage of "Türkiye" to better represent Turkish culture and values in December, including forcing "Made in Türkiye" to be used on exported products instead of "Made in Turkey." In official papers, Turkish ministries have begun to use the term "Türkiye."
