Southwest: The ministry of Transport certifies canoe drivers

In order to avoid frequent water accidents, the Ministry of Transport has issued competence certificates to some motorized canoe drivers.


The certificates were given by the Southwest Delegate for Transport representing the minister in a colorful ceremony that took place at the Limbe City Council Hall on Wednesday 20th July 2022.

Officials said the certification is to permit the concerns to ply the waters professionally. The recipients were successful candidates for the 2020 competency examination.


Chairing the ceremony, the First Assistant Senior Divisional Officer of Fako Marilyn Yefon pledged administrative support for the initiative.


"I'm elated after a long time to witness the issuance of competence certificates to motorized canoe drivers," said the Regional Delegate of Transport for the Southwest, Ebong Mesumbe, adding it was a tradition in the past apparently stopped for no reason.


The event we further gathered marked the re-launch of the issuance of certificates of competence through the leadership and initiative of the minister of Transport.


Among the 55 candidates who sat for the 2020 exam, 30 were successful coming from various fishing ports around the southwest region, Mabeta, Idenau, Ekondo Titi, and the Bakassi area.


The exam was conducted in partnership with an accredited training institution known as NOIAA in line with international norms.
