South Africa Urged to Deny Russian Billionaire's Yacht Entry

Updated: Jan 1

Geordin Hill-Lewis, the mayor of Cape Town, pleaded with the South African authorities to forbid the megayacht of a Russian billionaire from docking there since doing so could result in sanctions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is friendly with the steel and mining magnate Alexei Mordashov. Since Russia invaded Ukraine, the United States, the European Union, and NATO have begun taking the assets of Russian oligarchs close to Putin.

After Hong Kong was charged with providing a safe harbor to persons who had been sanctioned, the $500 million megayacht Nord left the city. On November 8 or 9, it is projected to touch down in South Africa. Although the precise location of its docking is unknown, the well-known port of Cape Town is claimed to have workers with the necessary expertise.
