Hassan Sheik Mohamud is re-elected as president of Somalia

After defeating the incumbent leader in a lengthy election decided by legislators in a third round of voting late Sunday, a former Somali president who was pushed out of power in 2017 has been reelected to the country's top position.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the Somali president from 2012 to 2017, won the election in Mogadishu, despite officials imposing a security lockdown to prevent deadly extremist attacks. 36 candidates competed in the first round of voting, with four making it to the second round. With no candidate receiving at least two-thirds of the 328 votes, the third round of voting was held, with Mohamud winning by a simple majority.
