Brief History of the International Women's day

International women's day 2022 theme: Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.

Every year, March 8 is celebrated as International Women’s Day across the world to promote women’s rights and honor their achievements across the political, economic, social, and cultural spheres.

The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. But why March 8? International Women’s Day is held on this date because it was on this day in 1917 that over 25,000 women marched through the streets of New York City demanding better pay, shorter hours, and voting rights.

This march took place during the First World War when women across Europe were mobilized as part of the war effort and before the Russian Revolution had changed the social landscape of Russia. Since then, International Women’s Day has become an occasion for both celebrating achievements and calling attention to challenges faced by women worldwide.

This year’s theme is particularly timely as we see many groups marginalized by society coming together to speak out against injustice and discrimination among cultural spheres.

The origins of International Women’s Day can be traced back to the many socialist movements witnessed in the early 20th century.
