AKWAYA: Inter-tribal war leaves several dead, wounded, and homeless

Over 50 persons have reportedly been killed, several wounded, and several others rendered homeless following an inter-tribal war between the Olitis and Ballins over farming land in Akwaya, Manyu Division in the Southwest Region. This happened on Friday 24th June 2022.

It is unclear what provoked the recent clashes between the two communities that have been farming and living together for a long time.

In the current clashes, several persons were wounded and several were rendered homeless as their houses were destroyed. The integrated health Centre in Ballin was also destroyed.

The proliferation of small arms from neighboring Nigeria is behind the frequent armed clashes between several communities in Akwaya.

On the 22nd of May 2022, over 70 persons were allegedly killed by separatists in Akwaya for resisting extortion from the latter.

Though the current Crisis is between two farming communities,pro-Government news organs blame the attacks on the separatists.
